Hello
SnowPeople!!
SnoWoman had the exciting opportunity to speak with U.S. athlete
Tommy Moe on Saturday, December 12, 1998, right after his win at the
second race of the Ford Downhill Series in Beaver Creek, Colorado.
Our conversation was very brief, but hey, when your whole career can
be affected by as little as one-tenth of one second, I imagine a
30-second conversation can feel like an eternity. This race will air
on NBC TV on Saturday, January 16, 1999, at 2-3PM EST (that's 11-12
Noon PST).
Tommy and team partner Kyle Rasmussen also took a 1st for the
U.S. as a team. Conditions were excellent - lots of sun - hard,
grippy snow, and a turny, technical course. Good job, Kyle and
Tommy!!! I also had the opportunity to speak with athlete AJ Kitt,
who did not ski in the race due to a wrist injury, but still managed
to remain in the spotlight by covering the event for NBC TV. Picabo
Street was also there, working for NBC.
I talked to AJ a little bit about how he manages to continue to
love a sport that can be so punishing physically. He shrugged that
one off by saying simply that "injuries are a part of any
sport". Gosh, AJ, that's kind of like saying "if you
charge it on the VISA, the bill will come". I guess the point
is that skiing is a sport that continues to push our limits outward
on what our bodies and minds are capable of as human beings, whether
you're an internationally ranked ski-racer, or an intermediate skier
still fighting fear at the top of the run on an icy day.
AJ did have a couple of wise words - when I asked him how the
skiers function up there at the top while waiting for their turn to
come out of the gate, he answered that although some racers get
super-serious, the general idea up there is to stay focused, and to
stay loose at the same time. This is SnoWoman, reporting to you on
the Zen of Ski Racing from here in Incline Village, Nevada. So long
for now - talk to you next time
