. 12-12-1997 - 6:00 p.m.

. Opening day at Diamond Peak was a great day of powder and tree boarding on Friday, December 12th. We arrived before 9:00 A.M. to be sure that we would get our fair share of the untracked runs and found no crowds at all. The weather was warm (to me) in the morning, requiring only a turtle neck and a shell. There was some fog over the lake, but it was still beautiful. In the afternoon, the fog cleared and it became cooler. I had to add a polar fleece layer to be comfortable.
. Diamond Peak has to have some of the best Lake Tahoe views anywhere. The views are a definite must see. Obtaining my favorite view of the lake requires going up Crystal Quad and skiing back down Crystal Ridge (Blue). I bring a digital camera so I can take a lot of shots without using any expensive-to-process 35mm film. Great views can be also be enjoyed from the Lakeview Quad (Blue and Black), Golden Eagle Bowl (Blue), Solitude Canyon (Black), and the Snowflake Lodge at the top of the Lakeview Quad.
. As a family resort, I feel that Diamond Peak has terrain for everyone. For learners, there is the School House chair that has a very easy run for even the most fearful. If you have small children, send then to the Bee Ferrato Child Ski Center for expert teaching. A friend of mine, Shelly (3 years old) always has fun there. For intermediate skiers/boarders, you will find most of the mountain fun. Some recommended intermediate runs would be Crystal Ridge, Sunnyside, Lakeview, Popular, and Wiggle.
. As a resort for advanced skiers/boarders, Diamond Peak has some of the best trees to be found on the planet. There are almost no limbs below 15 feet. For our first run, we went up Lodgepole and then up the Crystal Quad. We went down Crystal Ridge to Lightning (Black) and found two to three feet of corn snow powder. After enjoying several runs in this same area, we began exploring the trees to the left of the Crystal Quad. To put it lightly - WE LOVE THESE TREES! Of course, trees are dangerous and have rocks, etc. that are not usually found in other areas. I got a couple of major gouges on my K2 Ginsu 162. In addition to the beloved trees, we explored Golden Eagle Bowl (Blue), Diamond Back (Black), Battle Born (Black), Powder (Black), Luggi's (Black), Crysal Ridge (Blue), and Popular (Blue).
. Have you ever heard of a Launch Pad? The Launch Pad System is designed to lessen the impact of the chair when it picks you up. There are Launch Pads on Lakeview Quad, Lodgepole Quad, and Crystal Quad. The Pads are basically giant conveyor belts that speed you up to the same speed as the chair, so you can simply sit down when the chair gets to you. They make loading very easy. Of course, nothing in skiing is ever that simple, and the lift staff will help you learn all you need to know to utilize this device.
. Since my brother Ben works in the Rental Shop, I am always hearing about the new skis and boards becoming available. They have standard skis, performance skis, super sidecut skis, snowboards, boots, and poles. I keep threatening to try out those super sidecut skis - maybe I'll convert back to skiing.
. While you are planning your trip to Diamond Peak, you can think of some of these specials: Ski Free with reservations via 800-GOTAHOE (12-21-97 TO 12-23-97) OR $10 WITHOUT...Customer Appreciation Day - Free (4-27-97). For more detail, go to the Diamond Peak Website
