. I woke up three minutes before my alarm went off, probably because the sun just started to fill the room. I was jazzed to go to Heavenly. Instantly, I was looking forward to skiing the Nevada side and the full 3500' vertical feet. By the time I was ready to go the day was shaping up to be fantastic, the sun was shining and there were no clouds in sight. I loaded up the car and was on my way.
. It was a refreshing sight to see the lake and the surrounding mountains covered with a white blanket of snow. The only phrase I can use to describe it is "breath-taking". A quick drive on Hwy. 28 (from Incline Village) to Hwy.50 and I was there.
. Unfortunately, the Nevada side was not open from top to bottom, but I was not going to let that get to me. The view from the tram was spectacular, the lake was a royal blue...which looked awsome nestled in the surrounding white mountains. When I reached the top the wind was pretty strong, and the temperature was about 25 degrees. A quick trip down Patsy's run to the Waterfall chair and I was on my way to the top of the mountain. I skied down Maggies to the Sky chair and jetted on up the mountain. The Sky chair was a bullet... I was impressed with the speed of the chair, possibly the fastest I have ever been on.
. "Aw inspiring"..that's what came into my mind when I saw the view from the top. You could see the whole lake in all her magnificent splendor. I paused for a few shots with the cam, headed down Skyline trail to some fantastic views opening out into the Carson Valley, then on to Big Dipper trail to Comet Express.
. It was COLD, my toes were feeling the exposure, I headed back to the California side via the Von Schmidt trail. Some people told me that Betty's Bowl was a good bump run, so I went all the way down Betty's to the bowl and found a nice line to the bottom. It was a little rock strewn but the pitch was nice.I did about three of those and went to Ridge run down to Maggies then through Mumbo Meadows to Waterfall.
. About three turns into the run I took an ego busting double ejecting fall and slid like I was safe at home plate. It was my first double ejection of the year. Needless to say it was time for lunch, I took Pasty's chair to the Gunbarrel lift and down-loaded to the California Lodge. The ride down was a tourist's dream of unobstructed views of the lake and surroinding mountains. The thought that came to my mind was that Heavenly has the best views in Tahoe...hands down.
. It was beer thirty and I was craving a cervesa. I went into the cafeteria and got a steak sandwich, then made my into the bar. I was pleased to see that they had Pete's Wicked Winter brew on tap. After lunch I went to go play a little more. Although the coverage was limited I was impressed with the amount of snow making on the runs
. I made my way up to Ski Canyon run which was a nice pitched run with great snow. Then I veered left to Liz's which was also great. By the time I was done with the groomers I was ready to leave...my legs were feeling the burn of the day , so I decided to take Ridge Run to Waterfall and right the wrong from what had happened there the last time. This time I found a sweet line through the bumps without too many rocks. The snow on Waterfall was pretty much skier packed power bumps, which I could live with. I made it down the run with no falls and no stops. I considered taking another run, but decided against pushing my luck.
. Heavelny is a nice sized mountain with alot of potential - under the right conditions it is one of the ultimate playgrounds for any skier ability. I also thought that the trees at the mountain were some of the best lines that I had seen in a long time, and some of the best views of the lake anywhere in Tahoe. I got to the tram at the perfect time so I decided to take that down instead of the Gunbarrel chair. My craving for a beer took me to Lakeside Inn, where you could get almost any drink for a buck. After a nice Hefeweizen it was time to hit the road. All in all, a sweet day at a great resort..I cant wait to go after it dumps again.
The Sky chair was a bullet... I was impressed with the speed of the chair, possibly the fastest I have ever been on.
